Update

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the project so far and sent in their contributions. There’s still plenty of time to join in and help us to create a unique Atlas that explores and celebrates the local environment and the aspects of place that make it so unique. Get outside and make the most of the winter landscape or enjoy getting creative indoors!

There are different ways of getting involved:

From your local environment eg this can be your garden, a favourite walk or landscape near where you live, a favourite view or other special place.

Draw, paint or take a photograph of the detail of something that you can only see by looking really close up
Write a poem or tell us a local story based on a natural theme
Tell us the meaning or origin of local words e.g. place names, fields, landmarks
Create a visual map of your favourite walk (see our website for inspiration!)
Make a sound recording (for example a dawn chorus, local water source, owls at night)
Send us old photographs that depict the area in the past*

All the work that is created will be featured in an online version of the Atlas and some will be adapted to form part of a bound copy.

*If you have original photographs that we can scan and which you would like to be returned, please post them with your address and we will return them to you.

Create your own Atlas of the Natural World

We’ll also be running a series of in person and online workshops in the Spring designed to help participants create their own local Atlas about the natural world. There will be outdoor sessions in Photography, Mapmaking and Nature illustration led by professional artists, culminating in a bookmaking workshop led by artist Alice Fox to help participants bring these different elements together. In person workshops will take place in March. For information about online workshops, to register interest or any other enquiries about Five Hectares, please contact us via email: info@chrysalisarts.com

Please note: In-person sessions will be devised to comply with Covid guidelines. Numbers at all in-person sessions will be limited to maintain social distancing and additional Covid safety measures will be observed.
